| It is located in the town
of Cashel in County Tipperary. It's really hard to miss.
In the 5th century it was
made the seat of the King of Munster. In 1101 it was handed over to
the church, and did well until it was attacked in 1647 and its 3000
occupants were killed. The abbey was abandoned as a religious center
in the 18th century. It is now a well visited tourist site. The cross
of St. Patrick, who visited the Rock of Cashel in its early years, is
now in the museum there.
As you can see from my picture
(that's a corner of the castle in the foreground), it is a skeleton
of a castle, but a great deal is still standing. If theythe gate
to the hidden pasageways, there are many great little hidden rooms to
explore, and a fantastic view from the top of the castle tower.
Down the hill from Cashel
is the 13th century Hore Abbey, abandoned and in the middle of a field
of cows.
