When we hear about witch-hunts and witch-trials, we most often think of people being burned at the stake. Actually, a wide variety of methods were used (some of which are described in this series of 6 pieces) in addition to burning.  If you were considered worthy, you were "lucky" enough to be strangled or smothered before they actually burned you.  A common myth that seems to be going around the Pagan community is that most Witches weren't burned — this is in reference to the Salem Witch Trials, and so for that particular grouping, this would be mostly true (a few fringe victims, prior to the major incidents were burned).  However, over in Europe, burning was quite popular in Scotland, France, Germany, and other areas.

Also, we have no idea how many innocent people were burned without trial by mobs who set victims' homes on fire and later told the authorities that it had been some sort of tragic accident. [back to top]
