Interview: Sharon Knight | 1 | 2 | 3

Crescent Magazine interviewed Pandemonaeon's lead singer Sharon Knight at El Mundo Bueno Studios in San Francisco, CA. We invite you to listen as Sharon describes her passion for music and dance, and speaks of her views on magick — as well as the need for magick in our world. The interview is presented in a three-part series; this online-only feature is the third segment.

CM: What have your magickal influences have been, what kinds of training and study you've done that has led you to where you are now magickally?

Sharon Knight: My root practice is within Victor Anderson's line of the Feri Tradition, and from there I've also gone on to study Golden Dawn style magick, Thelemic style magick... [and] Chaos magick is of course in there. Also I've always been drawn to Celtic and British mythology so that gets woven in a lot.

CM: What have your musical influences been?

Sharon Knight: Of course traditional Irish music, Middle Eastern music as well got added after I got interested in belly dancing. Early on classic rock stuff, especially [music] that had mythical elements like Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. And since I've been with Winter, who is rock and blues influenced, we've added a lot more of that back into the music that I was playing at the time which was very largely influenced by Celtic music.

CM: How does dance and music reinforce your beliefs and your spirituality?

Sharon Knight: I guess the way dance and music reinforces my beliefs is in the way and the reason that I do them. I almost always only sing about things that are magickal, or mythical or at least very passionately based in aliveness. And as far as dance, I am almost always invoking something or doing some kind of magickal act when I dance and so then I get the body memory — its like I can link the magick into my cells. I'm sure you've probably noticed yourself, its not easy to be the kind of people that we are in the world that we live in because I think the magickal paradigm that I suspect consciousness is evolving into is at its very beginnings. For those of us who already have that starting to happen, its kind of hard to figure out how to fit into the mundane world. Sometimes I feel deathly bored with the routines that people expect us to go through, sitting in a cubicle so we can get our rent and, you know, drive a nice car and go to sports, and I so don't fit with that. I'm not always sure how to fit. By taking the myth symbolism that's important to me and bringing it to life in my world by making songs and dances out of it, just makes the world a place that I want to live in more.
